The New Year proved tough on the Cherokee wrestling team here Thursday night, as Estherville-LC and Spencer rolled over the Braves in a tough Lakes Conference double dual.

The Braves lost 53-18 to a solid E-LC club in the night's opening dual, and then fell 45-24 after sacrificing three open weights against Spencer.

Gabe Conley at 182, and Zac Anderson at 152 were double winners for Cherokee, each winning a match by fall and by forfeit. Other pin winners for the Braves were Hunter Morrow at 126, Trevor Devitt at 195, and Miah Back at 285.

"We had a tough first night back," said Cherokee coach Austin Todd. "We came out a little slow against E-LC and could never get any momentum built up to really get going. We came out with a little fire against Spencer and gave them a run, but giving up three open weights got the best of us.

"The kids gave a great effort and we look to continue to build on our season."
