The Cherokee Washington High girls spotted Storm Lake the first two points and then exploded with 20 consecutive points to take command and roll to a 56-35 Lakes Conference basketball win here friday night.

Cherokee blew to a 34-11 halftime lead and then played it cozy in the second half, with the Tornadoes draining three-pointers to keep it close before the 21-point victory was well in hand.

Megan Hummel paced Cherokee with 13 points, followed by Shanon Shaefer 10, and Megan Carlson eight. Chyann Smith led Storm Lake's scoring with 14 points, and Brenna Richter added 11.

Cherokee didn't shoot that well from the floor, making 20-69 field goals for a cold 29 percent, including a dismal 5-32 three-point shots. Cherokee was 11-19 from the foul line, and the Tornadoes 0-8.

Hummel also paced the WHS girls in steals with eight, and Jackie Wilson had six.

"We did a lot of experimenting in the game," noted Cherokee coach Heath Hagberg. "We played man-to-man defense in the third quarter and we had not done that this year, so the girls were trying it on the fly.

"We got everybody in the game, so that was nice. Shanon and the two Megans (Carlson, Hummel) had good games for us and played solid basketball."

Cherokee (2-7) hosts #1 Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove (11-0) tonight.
