The Eagles of coach Pat Bird had a seven-point lead with five minutes left in the game,, but did not take care of the ball down the stretch, allowing the host Hawks to tie the game with 1:05 remaining. MMC worked the vball until 11 second left and Zach Specht canned a huge three-point shot for the final victory margin.
Dylan Spieler led the Eagles in the slow-paced game with 12 points, and Andrew Hoefling added 11.
Casey Dorhout and Matt Queck paced HMS scoring with nine points each. It was Queck's basket that knotted the game at the 1:05 mark for HMS.
MMC netted 13-41 field goals for 32 percent, and was 7-11 from the foul line. HMS made 13-33 shots for 39 percent, and was just 3-5 for free throws.
"It was not a pretty game by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a road victory and we'll take that any time," said MMC coach Bird. "Andrew Hoefling stepped up and played a very good game on both ends of the court.
"It was one of those nights where nothing was clicking on offense, but to out guys credit they persevered and pulled out a victory."
The Eagles (7-5) host Remsen St. Mary's Friday and trek to Ruthven-Ayrshire/Graettinger-Terril on Saturday in a non-conference tussle.
