SPENCER - The Cherokee Washington High girls went stone-cold shooting in the second quarter, putting a scant three points on the board, on the way to a 51-41 loss at Spencer here Tuesday night.
The Tigers jumped to a quick 16-9 lead in the first frame, and then outscored Cherokee 9-3 in a slow-moving second quarter to take a 25-12 halftime lead. Cherokee outscored the Tigers 29-26 in the second half, but it was not enough.
Shanon Shaefer paced Cherokee's scoring with 15 points, followed by Megan Hummel nine, and Megan Carlson eight. Hummel also led her team in rebounding with 11, and Katie Sambrano grabbed four. Hummel tallied five steals, and Shaefer and Jackie Wilson four apiece.
Ashley Wiliiamson, a 6-1 post player, and teammate Alexa Allen led Spencer with 12 points apiece.
The WHS girls sank 10-36 field goals for an icy 28 percent, including 3-12 three-pointers. Spencer made 17-55 field goals for 31 percent, and was just 1-12 from the three-point line.
Spencer was 16-28 from the free throw line, and Cherokee 18-31 in the foul-plagued contest.
The 3-10 Cherokee girls play at 11-2 Hull Western Christian tonight.
