River Valley 'Revenue Purpose' Vote February 7

Monday, January 23, 2012

The River Valley School District will have an election on February 7, 2012, with residents of the district voting on how to spend the state-wide one cent sales tax funds that the district receives each year.

The document that determines how the district will spend this funding is called the Revenue Purpose Statement. River Valley's present Revenue Purpose Statement will expire in 2014. River Valley residents will be updating that statement through this vote.

A story published in the Sioux City Journal Friday stating that the River Valley School District was having an election to vote in a new sales tax was incorrect, according to River Valley Superintendent Julie DeStigter.

The district's past Revenue Purpose Statement allowed the state's one cent sales tax funds to be used for property tax relief and expenditures such as the purchase of buses, equipment, technology, and buildings, repairing, remodeling, and improving of buildings and grounds, and reduction in bonded indebtedness.

The district has benefited greatly from this funding source with the following major expenditures of building projects to include an industrial technology building, bus barn, elementary school addition, and Jr/Sr high school addition, removal of asbestos and demolition of the Washta building, resurfaced classroom floors, repaired roofs, purchased school busses, resurfaced the school track, built softball and baseball fields, installed fire alarm systems, purchased, moved, and updated portable classrooms, repaired heating systems in buildings, replaced sidewalks, expanded parking lots, installed a security system, improved internet access to the district and lowered our bonded indebtedness.

Voting will take place on February 7, 2012, with polls open at noon and closing at 8:00 p.m. Voters within River Valley school district must vote at the following sites:

Cherokee County Residents -Quimby Community Center

Ida County Residents - Cushing Fire Station

Woodbury County Precincts numbered in the 30's - Correctionville Community Building

Woodbury County Precincts numbered in the 40's - Cushing Fire Station
