AMES - A team from Morningside College placed third in a field of 19 teams - including several DCAA Division I and II teams - in the Women's Distance Medley Relay at the Iowa State University Open Indoor Track and field Meet last weekend in Ames.
Former Galva-Holstein prep standout Breanna Mathes, now a junior at Morningside, ran the leadoff leg for Morningside, followed by junior Lydia Bienlien, freshman Hailee Heitkamp and anchor Jessica Weiborg, a senior. The Lady Mustangs ran the event in a time of 12:13.42.
Mathes also finished sixth in the Women's 800 Meters with her time of 2:18.53, and another former Galva-Holstein athlete, Morningside junior John Harris, finished 4th in the Men's 800 Meters with his time of 1:56.13. Harris also ran on the Mustang men's 6th place 1600 meter relay team.
Morningside won four events at the two-day meet, with senior Monte Larson taking two events - the 600 yard run, breaking his own school record with his time of 1:11.49, and the 800 meter run, where he ran a 1:53.96.
Other winners for Morningside included sophomore Megan Glisar in the Women's High Jump, with a leap of 5-5 1/4, and senior Ryan Gass in the Men's non-seeded High Jump. Gass leaped 6-8 1/4. which would have landed him a seventh place finish in the seeded event.
