STORM LAKE - Morningside College athletes won seven events at Saturday's BVU Dennis Young Classic indoor track and field meet here, and the team's success was attributable in part to several athletes who prepped at Chronicle Times area schools.
The Mustangs won the men's 1600 meter relay with a time of 3:21.97, and two of the members have area ties - freshman Jay Welp, who spent part of his high school career at Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, ran the second leg and junior John Harris, former Galva-Holstein prep, anchored the winning team. Harris also ran the third leg on the Mustangs' winning 3200 meter relay team, which won in a time of 7:46.27, and won the men's 600 meter run with his time of 1:21.52.
Another former Galva-Holstein standout, Mustang junior Breanna Mathes, took third place in the women's Mile Run with her time of 5:14.89, and Mathes also ran the anchor leg on the Mustang women's 1600 meter relay team, which took third place with a time of 4:06.63.
Two other former Lakes Conference athletes also aided the Mustangs' cause. Sophomore Taylor Chapman, a former Spencer High School athlete, ran on the Mustangs' winning 3200 meter relay team, and former Sheldon athlete Jacob Chambers, a senior, captured the weight throw with his distance of 57- 3/4."
