Iowa girls start tourney play tonight

The Iowa High School girls basketball tournament gets under way tonight with Class 1A Regional Tournament play.

In Region 1, the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn girls play Remsen-Union tonight in Marcus, with the winner of that game playing the winner of tonight's Gehlen Catholic-Spalding Catholic game next Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Gehlen Catholic in Le Mars.The Region 1 final will be Monday Feb. 20 at Orange City Unity Christian.

The River Valley girls are assigned to Region 2 and they also have a first-round home game tonight in Correctionville against Siouxland Christian. The winner of that game will meet the winner of tonight's Whiting/Charter Oak-Ute game in Correctionville on Tues. Feb. 14. The Region 2 final will also be played on Saturday Feb. 20 , at a site to be determined.

Class 2A Regional play begins on Saturday, when Region 1 matchups include South O'Brien at Unity Christian, Orange City; Cherokee at Sioux Center; and Alta-Aurelia at East Sac County. The winners of the South O'Brien and Cherokee games will meet in Sioux Center next Tuesday, Feb. 14, in the next round, and the Alta-Aurelia/East Sac winner will meet the South Central Calhoun-Kuemper Catholic winner on Tuesday at Kuemper Catholic in Carroll. The Region 1 semifinals will be in Cherokee and Sheldon on Friday February 17 and the Regional Final will be at Cherokee Washington on Monday February 20.

In Region 8, the Ridge View girls have a first-round game Saturday against the defending state champion, undefeated and number 1-ranked Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove in Ida Grove, with the winner meeting the Woodbury Central - Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto winner on Tuesday in Ida Grove.

All Regional games start at 7 p.m. and admission is $5.
