The Meriden Evangelical Free Church has partnered with an organization called Zestos in Orange City so that they can provide a community meal once a month for the people of Cherokee County.
Zestos was formed from an observance of one individual at his work place when he realized some meat scraps had hit the floor and rather than simply throw it away, he thought it would be good to feed it to his hogs. Upon further examination, he noted packages of good food being thrown away. What a waste.
The idea took hold as other food production companies, stores and restaurants had surpluses of quality food as well. This food wasn't offered to the public for sale. A connection was made with the Meriden Evangelical Free Church, whose members thought it would be a great way to offer the broad community a nutritious meal. There will be no charge for this meal.
The Meriden Church will serve this meal once a month on the first Tuesday of the month all year long. They are calling the meal the "Shepherd's Table" with warm delicious food being served by volunteer members.
In addition to the meal, individuals who have a need or know of someone who does, will be able to take food home with them. The church is very excited to introduce The Shepherds Table to the community. They are hoping many people in the area will join them for a meal and a time for conversation with your neighbors and friends on Tuesday, March 6th.
The meal will be served from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Meriden Evangelical Free Church located at 412 E. Third St. on the east side of Meriden. There will not be a program that evening. If anyone has a question, they may call 443-8283.
