3 Braves compete at 2A State

Matthews 3rd, Bainbridge & McWilliams 5th for S-SOS

DES MOINES - Although highly competitive, the three Cherokee Braves who qualified for the 2012 Class 2A Iowa State Wrestling Tournament didn't advance too far in the rugged competition.

Cherokee freshman Hunter Morrow lost a narrow 4-2 decision in his opening match at 120 pounds to Jimmy Scieszinski of Van Meter, battled back in first-round consolation to pin Justin Aman of East Marshall/GMG in 7:53 in overtime, and then dropped a 7-2 decision to Cole Erickson of Mediapolis to finish his rookie prep season with an impressive 29-20 match record.

Cherokee senior Zac Anderson, who battled a painful back injury the latter part of the season, lost by fall in 5:30 to Steven Holloway of Mediapolis in his opener at 152 pounds, and then lost a 4-1 decision to Weston Shaw of Algona/NSK in first-round consolation to finish his season with a 26-5 record after rolling to a 24-1 mark before the injury in a match at Le Mars late in the season.

Cherokee senior Miah Back was pinned in 2:14 by Logan Hopp of New Hampton in his opener at 285 pounds, and then lost by fall in 1:40 to Creighton Fox of Central Clinton Dewitt to finish his season with a 24-16 match record.

The three Sheldon/South O'Brien wrestlers also competing in Class 2A earned place honors with impressive showings.

Senior Tanner Matthews claimed third place at 170 pounds with a 10-6 decision over Cash Wilcke of Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove to finish his stellar season with a shiny 44-2 match record.

Mathews lost his opener 15-13 to Keegan Davis of Perry, then fought back with three consecutive consolation wins, including an 8-4 decision over Richard England of Centerville, a 9-0 major decision over Adam Knier of Dubuque Wahlert, and a 5:29 pin win over Davis of Perry to avenge his first-round defeat.

S-SOS senior Austin Bainbridge placed fifth at 106 pounds with a 4-1 payback decision over Brady Ruden of Wilton. Bainbridge won his opener with a pin over Fletcher Green of Washington in 4:29, lost by fall in 2:50 in the quarterfinals to Brady Ruden of Wilton, beat Brendan Gould of Davenport Assumption 4-2, and lost by a 10-0 major decision to Patrick Woods of West Delaware Manchester to finish his season with a 34-10 record.

S-SOS senior Bruce McWilliams also placed fifth at 195 with a pin over Casey Rohret of Clear Creek-Amana in 5:14. McWilliams won his opener with a 3-1 decision over Kirby Kendrick of Dyersville Beckman, won by decision 9-3 over Casey Rohret of Clear Creek-Amana, lost 1-0 to Keaton Hulett of Creston/Orient-Macksburg, and lost 10-4 to Noah Pickard of North Polk Alleman to finish the season with a 25-4 record.
