DES MOINES - Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn's Jacob Meehan placed fourth at 160 pounds, and Ridge View's Logan Schafer fifth at 285 pounds to pace area grapplers at last week's Class 1A Iowa State Wrestling Tournament here.
Meehan won his opener by a 13-1 major decision over Luke Kramer of Maquoketa Valley, lost his quarterfinal match by a tense 2-1 overtime decision to Drake Fanslau of Underwood, pinned Cole Cook of Tipton in 1:46 in second-round consolation, beat Zach Jones of Okoboji 7-2 in third-round consolation, beat Gavin Shafer of Woodbine 5-2 in consolation semifinals, and lost a second OT verdict to Fanslau, this time a thrilling 4-2 decision in double overtime! Meehan finished his season with a snazzy 43-4 record.
MMC's Dillon Mugge lost by fall at 285 pounds to Tyler Smith of Lisbon in :52 in his first match, then pinned Lucas Ohrt of West Marshall State Center in :49, before losing 9-2 to Nick Fett of Audubon in a consolation second-round match. Mugge finished his season with a solid 30-11 record.
Ridge View's Schafer beat Zach Ries of Iowa City Regina 10-6 in his opening match, pinned David Howell of East Mills in 1:34 in the quarterfinals, then lost a 12-5 decision to Brandon McCracken of Aplington-Parkersburg, lost a 9-0 decision to Tyler Smith of Lisbon in consolation semifinals, and then beat Dillon Suhr of Guthrie Center 6-1 for fifth place to finish his sparkling season with a 41-6 match record.
Ridge View coach Scott Phelps said "both wrestlers represented Ridge View in a very positive manner and we as coaches were very proud of their efforts."
