AURELIA - At their monthly joint School Board meeting here on Monday, the Aurelia and Alta Boards approved the Early Retirement requests of four long-time staff members, with the Aurelia board approving the request of Head Custodian Linda Hines, and the Alta board approving the requests of teachers Dave Curbow (HS English, Creative Writing), Brad Nesbitt (HS Speech, Composition, Novels) and Barb Nesbitt (K-12 ELL). The boards thanked the retiring staff members for their years of exemplary service to the School District, and wished them well in their future endeavors.
In other business, the Boards approved out-of-state travel for the students and instructors going to the NASA competition in Houston, Texas and to music competitions at the University of South Dakota, and they also approved overnight travel for All-State speech contestants. The Alta Board approved the transfer of class funds from the classes of 2012, 2013 and 2014 to the Alta Activity fund for the NASA trip,
In other business, student Kevin Hernandez asked about starting a soccer program in the High School and the Alta Board approved moving forward with organizing a soccer program. The district will undertake a two year trial, competing initially at the Junior Varsity level.
High School Principal Tom Ryherd talked to the boards about the possibility of offering an alternative diploma in special situations where the student won't be able to complete graduation requirements, and he will provide more information at the March board meeting.
The Aurelia board approved getting bids for doing electrical work at the bus barn, and the Alta board accepted the District audit for the 2010-11 school year
The following contracts were approved: Kasey Reilly, MS boys track; Jen Keitges, assistant HS girls track; Jen Keitges and Kacee Jensen, Co-Head Coaches for HS volleyball;, Kacee Jensen, assistant softball; Molly Schwartz, Teacher Associate at Alta; and Sue Lindgren,Teacher Associate at Aurelia.
