Cherokee School Board OKs 2012-2013 school calendar

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Classes begin Aug. 16, end May 23

After considerable discussion Monday night, the Cherokee School District Board of Education unanimously approved the 2012-2013 School Calendar that includes the first day of school on Thursday, August 16, 2012, and the last day of school on Thursday, May 23, 2013.

Continuing to follow the staff's majority preference of ending the first semester before the Christmas break, next year's calendar consists of an 89-day first semester, and a 91-day second semester, with a nine-day Christmas (Winter) break (counting Saturday and Sunday) from Monday, Dec. 24 through Monday, Jan. 1. The second semester would begin on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2013.

The approved 2012-2013 calendar also includes a week-long Spring break from Monday, March 11 through Friday, March 15, with classes commencing Monday, March 18.

The Thanksgiving Holiday break will be Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 21-23, with classes starting back up on Monday, Nov. 26.

There will be no school on Good Friday, March 29, heading into the Easter weekend.

The 2013 graduation ceremonies will be Sunday, May 19.

In presenting the proposed 2012-2013 school year calendar to the Board, Superintendent Dr. John Chalstrom emphasized that he had surveyed the staff and received 75 responses from three primary questions - (1) Which calendar option (there were two proposed) do you prefer? (2) Do you prefer ending the (first) semester prior to Christmas? (3) Do you prefer having a week-long Spring break in March?

Chalstrom reported that 64-percent of the respondents to question (1) favored August 16 starting date as opposed to an August 20 starting date on the second calendar option.

For question (2) 81-percent favored ending the first semester prior to Christmas.

And for question (3), 83-percent preferred a week-long Spring break in March.

According to Chalstrom, 35-percent of the responses were from Washington High School staff, 28-percent from Cherokee Middle School, 25-percent from Roosevelt Elementary, five-percent from Central Administration Office, and four-percent from ECLC.

It was also noted that due to scheduling conflicts, the March Board meeting will be moved back one week from Monday, March 19, to Monday, March 26 at the regular meeting time of 5:30 p.m. in the WHS Library
