DES MOINES - The defending Class 1A Champion Storm Lake St. Mary's jumped out to a 20-8 first quarter lead in their first-round State Tournament game Monday against Lisbon, and the Panthers went on to cruise to a 62-44 victory over the Lions (20-6).
The Panthers (26-0) were led by Kennedy Drey's 25 points and 11 boards, and Luke Lenhart added 21 points for St. Mary's, who earned the right to take on fellow Northwest Iowa representative Boyden-Hull (24-2), a 64-44 first round winner over Iowa Mennonite, in a semi-final game on Thursday afternoon.
The Panthers couldn't quite do it, though, as they fell to the Comets, 69-61, in a tight, hard-fought contest which was closer than the final score indicates, as St. Mary's was forced to foul throughout the last minute and Boyden-Hull connected on their free throws.
Boyden-Hull will meet Danville (27-0), which lost in the title game last year, for the Class 1A State Championship tonight (Friday). Luke Lenhart had 17 points to lead St. Mary's scoring.
