All-Star wrestling in Cherokee tonight

The Northwest Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association will host the 4th Annual High School Senior All Star Wrestling Meet tonight at Cherokee Washington High School.

The meet features several area prep wrestlers, including Cherokee, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, and Ridge View seniors. They include 2012 State Wrestling Tournament qualifiers Zac Anderson and Miah Back of Cherokee, Jacob Pearson and Dillon Mugge of MMC, and Logan Schafer of Ridge View.

Cherokee is coached by Austun Todd, MMC by Steve Phiilips, and Ridge View by Scott Phelps.

The meet will start at 6:30 pm. Admission is $5 for adults. The Honorary Tournament Director for this year's meet is Rich Stillman. Rich was a three-sport stand out at Emmetsburg High School during the 1970's. Individually, Rich was a three-time state champion with a record of 100 wins and seven losses.

Rich was inducted into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1995. Rich officiated for 13 years in northwest Iowa, highlighted with officiating seven straight state championships in Des Moines. Rich coached for eight years at the Jr. High and High school level in Emmetsburg.

Honorary Coaches for the event this year are Tim Jager of Sioux City, Jim Lewallen of Cherokee, Doug Hoffman of Graettinger, and Lyle Lundgren of Orange City.

Jager is the Head Wrestling Coach at Morningside College. He was named the 2011 NAIA recipient of the NWCA's Bob Bubb Coaching Excellence Award presented in each division of college wrestling to a coach who epitomizes the qualities and characteristics of a role model and mentor for developing student-athletes.

Lewallen was the Head Wrestling Coach at Cherokee Washington High School from 1969-1990. Lewallen started the youth wrestling program at Cherokee and later reaped the benefits by having two state champions along with numerous place winners. After retiring as head coach, he coached middle school and then returned to the high school as an assistant. Lewallen is a graduate of UNI where he wrestled for legendary coach Chuck Patten.

Hoffman was the Head Wrestling Coach at Graettinger from 2001-2006 and served as an assistant coach from 1985-1994 and from 2007-2012. Doug has worked with the youth and middle school programs in Graettinger since the early 90's and has been a large part of the success of Graettinger-Terril wrestling over these past two decades Doug is graduate of Graettinger High School and has lived and worked in the area his entire life.

Lyle Lundgren is the head wrestling coach at MOC-Floyd Valley. He spent eight years coaching at Sibley-Ocheyedan, six of those years as head coach before moving to Orange City to be the first head coach for the Dutch in 1991. Lundgren was an All American in both wrestling and football for the Red Raiders of Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Lundgren's sons both wrestled for him at MOC-Floyd Valley. Andrew was an All-American wrestler for Northwestern College while Paul placed in the Iowa High School State Tournament.

The District Coaches of the Year will also be receiving recognition. Those coaches are as follows: 1A Adam McElrath of Woodbury Central, 2A Stan DeZeeuw of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, and 3A David Schaefer from Spencer. The official of the year is Tom Huls of Akron. Huls was also voted as Official of the Year for the state of Iowa at the 2012 Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament.

There will also be a raffle at the event for 50 pounds of ground beef as well as a 50/50
