James W. Johnson of St. John, Kansas, age 64, died March 17, 2012, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. Memorial services will be held today at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Pratt, Kan. and Saturday, March 24 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Marcus at 11 a.m.
James (Jim) was born Jan. 30, 1948, in LeMars, the son of Arthur W. and Catherine R. Johnson. He attended Trinity Parochial School through eighth grade and Marcus High School. He went on to earn a BS Degree through South Dakota State University and Iowa State University.
Jim and Diana Skaggs were united in marriage on July 15, 1972 at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee.
James was an active member of the American Quarter Horse and Palomino Horse Breeders of America by raising, training, shoeing and showing horses. He earned numerous state and national awards in the show ring. He served the horse community throught 4-H, Founding Father and President of the South Central Stock Horse Assoc. and Kansas Quarter Board Member of eight years.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Gary.
James is survived by his wife, Diana, and his son, Louis. Other surviving family include his mother, Catherine Wendt, Marcus; two brothers, Chuck Johnson and his wife Mary Lou of Hiawatha, Iowa and Paul Johnson and his wife Jackie of Pratt, Kan, and one sister, Faith Bentz and her husband John of Marcus, and a mother-in-law, Veniece Young of Cleghorn.
