STORM LAKE - Marc Husman placed first in the 800 meters, and second in the 200 meters to pace the Cherokee Braves at the Lakes Confernce Indoor Track & Field Meet here Tuesday night at Buena Vista University.
The young Braves recorded several top 10 finishes in the rugged Lakes Meet that serves to kick off the track and field season. No team totals are kept in the abbreviated indoor format.
Husman's runner-up time in the 200 meters was 24.05. The fleet junior also leaped 19-01 to place 10th in the long jump.
Grayson Roosa was 9th in the shot put for Cherokee with a heave of 40-01 1/4, and Stetson Dagel was 10th with a throw of 40-01.
The Braves 4x400 relay of Zack Taylor, Ben Sampson, Husman, and Rasheen Ulis placed 8th in a time of 3:48.57.
"Everyone ran well for us the first time out," said veteran Cherokee coach Lynn Jolly. "This was the first time we got times for everyone after five weeks of practice."
The Braves will send a partial squad to the USD Indoor in the Dakota Dome in Vermillion Saturday, and will compete next Friday in the Galva-Holstein Relays hosted by Ridge View in Holstein.
The Cherokee Washington High girls also competed and Taylor Woods won the shotput with a throw of 36-4 1/4. A few hours before, Woods threw at the High School Classic Meet at Iowa State University and placed fifth in all classes with a 37-10 effort.
Also at the boys ISU High School Classic the week before, Husman placed third in the 400 meters in all classes with a time of 51.38.
