Cherokee girls beat SL in tennis

STORM LAKE - The youthful Cherokee Washington High girls tennis team defeated Storm Lake 5-4 to kick off Lakes Conference action for the new season here Tuesday night.

In varsity singles for Cherokee, Denise Freed beat Alyssa Sievers 10-7 at #1, Emily Estala beat Emmerly Mai 10-6 at #2, Taylor Meyerhofer lost 10-4 to Erin Deters at #3, Megan Carlson lost 10-7 to Lan Houng Brown at #4, Shelby Bingham lost 10-5 to Noul Keovyphone at #5, and Brooke Luetkeman beat Paige Cavanaugh 10-4 at #6.

In varsity doubles, Freed and Carlson beat Sievers and Mai 10-7 at #1, Bingham and Luetkeman lost 10-4 to Deters and Brown and #2, and Estala and Megan Hummel beat Keovyphone and Cavanaugh 10-7 at #3.

The Cherokee JV team lost 6-3 to the Tornadoes.

In JV singles for Cherokee, Hummel won 8-5 at #1, Whitney Webb lost 8-1 at 32, Rachel Corken lost 8-6 at #3, Molly White lost 8-3 at #4, Cassy Joines lost 9-8 (tiebreaker) at #5, and Jennifer Davis won 8-2 at #6.

In JV doubles for Cherokee, Webb and Corken lost 8-3 at #1, White and Joines lost 8-4 at #2, andf Davis and Lauren Yearous won 8-2 at #3.

"We played pretty good for our first time out," noted Cherokee coach Tricia Langholdt.

The Cherokee girls host Spirit Lake tonight, and Estherville-LC on Thursday.
