DES MOINES - The Alta-Aurelia High School Jazz Band won the Class 2A State championship in competition held here on Tuesday, topping second place South Central Calhoun.
The Alta-Aurelia band was under the direction of Ryan Meyer, who is leaving the program to take a position at Harlan High School next year. The Harlan Jazz Band placed 2nd in the Class 3A competition on Tuesday.
It was the first championship for the combined Alta-Aurelia program. The Aurelia Jazz Band previously took top state honors in 2007.
The South O'Brien Jazz Band placed 6th in Class 2A competition Tuesday, and the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Jazz Band, which competed in Class 1A, did not place in the Top 8 in that class.
Alta-Aurelia's Lexy Tuttle, on tenor sax, flute and clarinet, and South O'Brien's Shaan Desai, on alto sax, were both named Outstanding Performers in Class 2A.
