WHS Speech students celebrate record year

The Speech Department has had an eventful year at Cherokee Washington High School, with the 2011-2012 school year a year of records.

There were record amounts of students out for Group and Individual Speech, including 75 kids in Group Speech and 20 in Individual.

Also, there was a record number of 17 freshman out for speech this year. Besides record numbers, students were very successful at competitions earning many Outstanding ratings.

In fact, two groups -TV News and Ensemble Acting - made it to All-State at ISU in Ames, and seven individuals made it to All-State at UNI in Cedar Falls.

They also had record turnouts for local performances for Group and Individual Speech.

Finally, the Lip Sync to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis that the Speech team holds each October also saw a record turnout and raised over $1,500 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The season was topped off by Awards Night at WHS in March. Several students were honored with Varsity Letters and Participation awards.

The WHS Group Speech team is coached by James and Jaylene De Vos, Tyler Youngers, and Maylissa Wells.

The WHS Individual Speech team is coached by James and Jaylene De Vos.
