Rita Pearson of Aurelia and owner of Jung's Tae Kwon Do Academy of Cherokee can now be referred to as Master Pearson. Grand Master Woo Jin Jung, founder of the academy, awarded her the rank this past winter at Jung's Tae Kwon Do Academy headquarters in Cedar Rapids. The grueling two and half hour test netted her the honor of Master and she was also inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame at the academy headquarters.

When Pearson was awarded her new rank as Master she was also awarded with another surprise. Each year Grand Master Jung personally chooses an instructor of the year for Jung's Tae Kwon Do Academy. This year he chose Pearson who was both shocked, pleased and humbled by his decision. It is a great honor to be chosen out of many instructors by a mentor.

Tae Kwon Do is the art of hand and feet fighting. At Jung's it's not so much about the competition but more about the individuals achieving success at their own pace and level. The main themes throughout are courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit. With those virtues in place the instructors, students and parents essentially become family. That is why the ranks and awards are such an honor for Pearson.

Pearson began taking Tae Kwon Do lessons with her sons when they were young. She and her oldest son, Steven Rupp, both earned their black belts. About 15 years ago Pearson opened her own Jung's Tae Kwon Do academy here in Cherokee. She started out at the Wellness Center with over 30 students. About two years ago she moved her do jahng or school to the Kountry Klass Mall at 515 West Cedar in Cherokee. Classes are held Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. and on Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. Anyone can join Tae Kwon Do classes at any time and if interested can contact Pearson at 712-229-2751 or email rjpkjp@newulmtel.net.

That is a weird Taekwondo uniform, I thought it was Karate uniform but then the Korea flag made me re-think again.
