There are not too many times when I am at a loss for words, but I don't know how to explain the damage occurring to the newspapers and magazines at the Cherokee Public Library. It is very disheartening.
We have had too many incidents recently where parts of the newspaper are missing or articles torn out. The obituaries in the Sioux City Journal and the classified section of the Des Moines Register seem to be favorites with the colored pictures in the Chronicle Times disappearing on a regular basis. Sometimes entire issues are just gone.
Off and on we have kept newspapers at the desk and had people sign them out although that seems to be the height of ridiculousness to me. It is time consuming for the staff and irritating for patrons. So this week we have put all the newspapers back on the rack to await their fate.
In the case of magazines, we find coupons neatly cut out and pages missing. For example, about a year ago a patron noticed that the tech tip section of Road and Track was always torn out. For a while we held issues at the desk. Then a part time staff member suggested that we tape the pages into place. So now we use clear mailing tape to secure that section. We shouldn't have to do that, but at least it solved the problem. However, it doesn't take care of the times an entire magazine disappears, sometimes complete with the plastic folder.
I realize subscriptions to newspapers and magazines are expensive and many people have eliminated them from household budgets. That's actually a big reason why we provide them at the library. It's just too bad the proverbial rotten apple has to spoil things.
On a brighter note... thanks to everyone who participated in National Library Week! Many cookies were eaten and a good time was had by all. Winners of the door prizes were Bobby George, Donald Johnson, Darlene Wiersema, Carolyn Wiebe, Sandi Beals and Daedra Collins.
