Cherokee girls blast E-LC in tennis

The Cherokee Washington High girls tenniis team claimed its second win in succession with a convincing 8-1 Lakes Conference victory over Estherville-LC here Tuesday night in a weather-makeup match from April 12.

Cherokee swept the singles competition and won two of three doubles matches.

In varsity singles for WHS, Denise Freed beat Bailey Hagen 10-1 at 31, Taylor Meyerhofer beat Kelly Zebedee 11-10 (7-5 tiebreaker) at #2, Emily Estala beat Carol Daniels 10-6 at #3, Megan Carlson beat Emily Chrestiansen 10-2 at #4, Brooke Luetkeman beat Maddy Burns 10-6 at #5, and Megan Hummel beat Amber Schacherer 11-10 (7-5 tiebreaker) at #6.

In varsity doubles, Freed and carlson defeated Hagen and Daniels 10-4 at #1, Estala and Meyerhofer defeated Zebedee and Chrestiansen 10-4 at #2, and Luetkeman and Hummel lost 10-5 to Burns and Schacherer at #3.

"Everyone played extremely well," said Cherokee coach Tricia Langholdt. "Taylor and Megan fought hard for their wins."

E-LC led 4-3 in JV matches before rain and darkness halted two of the three doubles matches.

In JV singles for Cherokee, Rachel Corken won 8-3 at #1, Cassy Joines won 8-5 at #2, Jennifer davis lost 8-4 at 33, Lauren Yearous won 8-5 at #4, Dallas Ellis lost 8-4 at #5, and Sammi Schoenherr lost 8-2 at #6.

Jones and Davis lost 8-6 at #1 doubles before the rain and darkness ended the remaining two doubles matches.

"I am happy with how the JV played," noted Langholdt. "Lauren is undefeated in singles so far this season."

The Cherokee girls host Storm Lake Monday night.
