CARROLL - The Cherokee 8th grade boys kicked off their 2012 track and field season at Carroll last week, claiming three first-place finishes in the triangular meet.
Skylar Staver won the discus with a throw of 101-6, Mason Kruger won the high jump with a leap of 4-8, and Christian Lundy won the 100 meter hurdles in 17.99.
Cherokee second-place finishers were Mason Meitzenheimer with a 16-9 1/2 long jump, a 59.82 time in the 400 meters, and a 27.68 clocking in the 200 meters. The Little Braves 4x100 relay was also second with Evan Wharton, Tyler Faist, Derrick Stowell, and Lundy timed in 54.02; and the 4x400 relay was second in 4:32.27 with Wharton, Derek Nixon, Adam Cedar, and Meitzenheimer aboard.
Thirds went to the shuttle hurdle relay of Kruger, Steven Lundquist, Brett Barritt, and Kundy timed in 1:18.66; the distance medley relay of Josh Nichols, Lundquist, Stowell, and Cedar timed in 4:54.70; the 4x200 relay of Nichols, Lundquist, Cedar, and Kruger timed in 2:01.75; and the sprint medley relay of Wharton, Stowell, Faist, and Nixon timed in 2:07.04.
Denison-Schleswig won the team title with 72 points, followed by Carroll 71.5, and Cherokee 33.5.
