STORM LAKE - Cherokee's youthful Braves dropped a 7-2 Lakes Conference boys tennis decision to Storm Lake on the Tornadoes home court here Monday night.
In varsity singles for Cherokee, Brett Walker lost 6-7, 2-6 to Blake Overmohle at #1; Matt Enderlin beat Jesse Luedtke 6-3, 6-2 at #2; Connor Ogren lost 6-3, 1-6, 0-1 (super tiebreaker) to Geoff Converse at #3; Alec Schultz lost 6-3, 2-6, 0-1 (super tiebreaker) to Taylor Friesen at #4; Eric Wilkie lost 1-6, 0-6 to Ross Dewerff at #5, and Alexx Maurer lost 0-6, 3-6 to Caleb Hinners at #6.
In varsity doubles action for the Braves, Walker and Ogren fell 2-6, 2-6 to Overmohle and Converse at #1; Enderlin and Schultz beat Luedtke and Friesen 6-2, 6-4 at #2; and Wilkie and Maurer lost 1-6, 3-6 to Dwerff and Hinners at #3.
In JV action, Storm Lake won 3-1 in abbreviated action due to Cherokee's low numbers.
In JV singles, Andrea Pavanello lost 1-8 at #1, Nathan Fowler lost 5-8 ar #2, and Nick Bennigsdorf fell 0-8 at #3.
In JV doubles, Pavanello and Fowler won 9-8 (7-3 tiebreaker) at #1 doubles.
"We played very competitively this meet," noted Cherokee coach Dave Zelle. "Two matches won, two that went three sets, and one that went to a tiebreaker in the first set. With just a bit more mental toughness and we will be able to close out some of those matches. Things are improving.
"Enderlin had a solid win at #2 and teamed with Alec for a nice win at #2 doubles. He is our most consistent player day in and day out."
