Cherokee drops weather make-up match, 7-2

The Cherokee Braves tennis team beat Estherville-LC 5-4 in a highly competitive Lakes Conference battle here Monday night after losing 7-2 to the Midgets in a weather-delayed April 12 match (in Estherville) that was completed here before Monday night's victorious re-match.

In varsity singles for winning Cherokee here Monday, Brett Walker lost 3-10 to Brad Olsen at #1, Matt Enderlin beat John Reisner 10-0 at #2, Connor Ogren beat Levi Jensen 10-6 at #3, Alec Schultz beat Thomas Bortvit 10-3 at #4, Alexx Maurer beat Jacob Olson 10-3 at #5, and Andrea Pavanello lost 10-11 (4-7 tiebreaker) to Tim Soper at #6.

In varsity doubles for the Braves, Walker and Ogren lost 4-10 to Olsen and Bortvit at #1, Enderlin and Schultz beat Jensen and Olson 10-3 at #2, and Pavanello and Nathan Fowler lost 7-10 to Resiner and Soper at #3.

E-LC won the abbreviated JV match 4-2.

In JV singles, Fowler lost 6-8 at #1, Trenton Larsen won 8-3 at #2, Nick Bennigsdorf lost 5-8 at #3, and Nate Laursen won 8-6 at #4.

In JV doubles, Maurer and Larsen lost 2-8 at #1, and Bennigsdorf and Laursen lost 3-4 at #2.

"It's nice to win one!" exclaimed Cherokee coach Dave Zelle of his team's first match win this season. "The guys did a nice job and our improvement versus the first time we played E-LC is clearly evident."

In the loss to E-LC in the match carried over from Estherville April 12 and finished here Monday night, the Braves managed just two wins, with Enderlin figuring in both in his #2 spot.

In varsity singles for the Braves, Walker lost 6-10 to Olsen at #1, Enderlin beat Resiner 10-3 at #2, Schultz lost 4-10 to Jansen at #3, Eric Wilkie lost 3-10 to Bortvit at #4, Pavanello lost 3-10 to Olson at #5, and Maurer lost 5-10 to Soper at #6.

In varsity doubles, Walker and Wilkie lost by injury default to Olsen and Bortvit at #1 after Wilkie rolled his ankle, Enderlin and Schultz beat Reisner and Olson 10-8 at #2, and Pavanello and Maurer lost 3-10 to Jensen and Soper at #3.

E-LC won the abbreviated JV match 4-2.

In JV action, Fowler lost 3-8 at 31, Larsen won 9-7 at #2, Bennigsdorf lost 1-8 at #3, and Laursen lost 2-8 at #4.

In JV doubles, Fowler and Larsen lost 5-8 at #1, and Bennigsdorf and Laursen won 8-2 at #2.
