LE MARS - Playing some of their best golf to date, the Cherokee Braves placed second in last week's Lakes Conference triangular, also featuring host Le Mars and Emmetsburg.
Emmetsburg won the triangular after posting a 165, followed by Cherokee 171, and Le Mars 173.
Adam Pitts paced the Braves with a 38 to tie for medalist honors. Other Cherokee scores were Jake Spindler 41, Austin Winchell 44, Zac Anderson andDevin Mongan each 48, and Rick Weaver 65.
"It was fun to see us be able to put it together for the first time this year," noted Cherokee coach James DeVos. 'Our team score of 171 shaved seven strokes off our previous best of the year and earned us our first conference victory of the year.
"We finished this year 1-6 in conference play and look forward to carrying our momentum into the Lakes Conference Meet @ Brooks Golf Course in Okoboji.
"Adam Pitts had his break-out meet of the year, shooting 38 and tying for medalist honors. He ended up losing on the 2nd playoff hole to Parker Rolfes from LeMars. It's nice to see the boys' hard work paying off later in the season, and it speaks volumes to their mental determination as things didn't go as they had liked early on in the year."
Le Mars won the JV match carding 189, to Emmetsburg's 215, and Cherokee's 242.
Josh Haupert was low medal for the Young Braves with a 57, followed by Andrew Zarr 58, Aaron Boisen 60, Jordan Taylor 67, Zane Young 68, and Jacob Fry 86.
