The busy Cherokee Braves golf team played in three events in the past week, competing at the Le Mars Invitational, the Lakes Conference Meet at Brooks Golf Course in Okoboji Monday, and hosting a Lakes Conference triangular in Cherokee, also including Storm Lake and Le Mars.
The Braves placed 8th in the 13-team field at Le Mars, carding a 362 team score. MOC-Floyd Valley won the team title with a 305, followed by Le Mars Gehlen 333, Lawton-Bronson 337, Newell-Fonda 341, Hull Western Christian 347, Le Mars Red 348, Woodbury Central 357, Cherokee 362, Le Mars Black 369, MOC-FV JV 375, South Sioux City 392, MVAO 453, Kingsley-Pierson 654.
Austin Winchell and Adam Pitts were low medal for Cherokee with 43s, followed by Zac Anderson 46, Devin Mongan 49, and Aaron Boisen 56.
Cherokee placed fifth in the team standings at the Lakes Conference Meet at Brooks National Golf Course, shooting 335. Storm Lake won the team race with 321, followed by Spencer 322, Spirit Lake 324, Estherville-LC 327, Cherokee 335, Emmetsburg 344, HWC 346, and Le Mars 348.
Pitts led the Braves with a 76, followed by Jake Spindler 83, Winchell 85, Ric Weaver 91, Mongan 92, and Anderson 98.
"Brooks Golf Course played tough as usual, but that didn't stop these Braves golfers from competing very well once again," said Cherokee coach James DeVos. "Another season low was shot as Adam Pitts led the way with a 76, good for 2nd place All-Conference. Cherokee placed 5th overall as a team, and shot a 335, by far our best of the year. This marks Adam's 2nd year in a row placing in the Conference Meet.
"Storm Lake won the meet by 1 stroke over Spencer with a team score of 321. It was a tight race today and the Braves held tough and placed very well. They are getting more and more confident on their games each day and its fun to see. Sectionals are on Friday at Emerald Hills and we'll see if we can go over there and make some noise."
Storm Lake won the Cherokee triangular meet with 175, followed by the Braves 176, and Le Mars 186.
Winchell was co-medalist with a 40 to lead Cherokee, followed by Pitts 43, Spindler 44, Mongan 49, Anderson 54, and Weaver 64.
"In our final tune-up prior to the Sectional Golf Meet on Friday, we came up 1 stroke short against Storm Lake," noted coach DeVos. "Austin Winchell played very well, tying for medalist with Storm Lake's John Bral. Austin eventually lost on the first sudden death playoff hole.
"As a team, our 176 score was again below our season average. Friday will bring us Emerald Hills Golf Course and it will be a challenge. The boys are looking forward to the opportunity to finish their season on a high note."
