WHS girls tennis team falls to Le Mars

LE MARS - Cherokee Washington High School juniors Megan Carlson and Megan Hummel managed the lone two wins for the WHS girls tennis team in a regular season-ending 7-2 loss to Le Mars in Lakes Conference action here Monday night.

In varsity singles for Cherokee, Denise Freed lost 2-10 to Carolyn Ahlers at #1, Taylor Meyerhofer fell 2-10 to Emily Ahlers at #2, Emily Estala lost 5-10 to Catie Meis at #3, Megan Carlson beat Hannah Lang 10-5 at #4, Brooke Luetkeman lost 8-10 to Anne Meis at #5, and Megan Hummel beat Emily Pick 10-8 at #6.

In doubles, Freed and Carlson lost 1-10 to Carolyn Ahlers and Catie Meis at 31, Estala and Meyerhofer lost 3-10 to Emily Ahlers and Lang at 32, and Luetkeman and Hummel lost 10-11 (3-7 tiebreaker) to Pick and Jordan Helms at #3.

"The girls all played great matches," said Cherokee coach Tricia Langholdt. "Le Mars is a tough team all around and we fought hard for each point, they just didn't end our way. Le Mars and Spirit Lake were our only losses this season.

"The girls worked hard in practice and it paid off in meets. It's hard to lose your last meet, but they put forth their best efforts. We had a great regular season."

Cherokee lost the JV match to Le Mars 1-8.

In JV singles, Shelby Bingham lost 5-8 ar #1, Cassy Joines lost 5-8 ar #2, Jennifer Davis lost 1-8 at #3, Lauren Yearous won 9-7 at #4, Rachel Corken lost 3-8 at #5, and Katie Sambrano lost 5-8 at #6.

In JV doubles, Joines and Davis lost 1-8 at #1. Yearous and Sambrano lost 5-8 at #2, and Corken and Brianna Fowler won 8-5 at #3.

Cherokee plays Sioux City Heelan Saturday in Le Mars in Regionals, with that winner playing the Le Mars/Denison-Schleswig winner later that day. The team travels to Spencer Thursday for individual post-season play.
