Double winner Woods leads Cherokee

EMMETSBURG - Led by double winner Taylor Woods, the improved Cherokee Washington High girls track and field team finished third in the team race at this week's Emmetsburg Relays.

Woods won the shot put with a 38-6 effort, and also won the discus with a throw of 111-6.

Cherokee pposted four umpressive second-place finsishes, including katy Hart's 15-7 1/2 long jump, Brookelyn Hoeppner's 4-10 high jump, Ariana Smith's 32-4 shot put effort, and Breeana DeVos's 13:15 clocking in the 3000 meters.

Cherokee thirds went to Smith's 96-0 discus throw, and Sara Ramirez with a 29.48 time in the 200 meters. Ramirez also was fourth in the high jump with a 4-8 leap, Courtney Johnson was fourth in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:23, and Annalise Engelke fourth in the 3000 meters with a personal best time of 14:25.

Anna Wharton was fifth in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:26, and Kaitlan Kennebeck fifth in the 400 meters in a time of 1:14. Erin Kelley was sixth in the 800 meters in 2:49.

The Cherokee shuttle hurdle relay was third in 1:21, featuring Kennebeck, Jordan Weaver, Wharton, and Johnson.

The 4x200 relay team of Ramirez, Wharton, Emily Haselhoff, and Katy Hart was fourth in 1:59; the 4x400 relay also was fourth with Haselhoff, Kennebeck, Kelley, and Hanna Henson aboard.

The 4x100 relay was fifth in 57.99 with Katy Hart, Sydney Hart, Jasey Stowater, and Johnson aboard; and the distance medley relay was fifth in 5:24 with Katy Hart, Stowater, Henson, and deVos running.

The sprint medley of Katy Hart, Ramirez, Haselhoff, and Kelley was sixth in a time of 2:14.

"It was a windy night but we had a great meet," said Cherokee coach Jolene Hultgren. "Taylor went the season undefeated in the shot put. What a great accomplishment!

"The team has improved so much during the season. They are now taking care of all the technical aspects, gaining confidence, and learning what it means to be competitive. They have had a great season."
