Barbara Sundberg, age 69, of Sioux Falls, S.D. and formerly of Sioux Rapids, died on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Barbara Elaine Thompson was born Dec. 29, 1942 at the Sioux Rapids Hospital in Sioux Rapids, the daughter of Ivan and Virginia (Bowers) Thompson. Growing up, Barbara attended grade school and graduated high school from Sioux Rapids Consolidated Schools. Following high school graduation, she attended Mankato Commercial College in Mankato, Minn.

On May 7, 1967, Barbara was united in marriage to Gary Sundberg. Together, they were blessed with one son, Brett. In 1993, Barbara met a special man, Al Loebig, and they would share 15 happy years together until his death in 2008.

Barbara worked in various jobs over the years, including waitressing and bartending as well as a clerk and a day care provider. She loved traveling to Arizona, South Dakota and returning to her home state of Iowa. Her membership in various card clubs and being a Red Hat member in Arizona and Iowa brought great joy to her life. Her hobbies included: crocheting dolls for every season, making China dolls, creating afghans, canning and especially cooking. Her pride and joy was her family. Barbara cherished and loved her son, grandchildren and loved visiting her extended family in their homes.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; special friend, Al Loebig; and Al's son, Steve Loebig.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Brett Sundberg of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two brothers: David (Joann) Thompson of Schuyler, Neb. and Mark (Candyce) Thompson of Sioux Rapids; 17 nieces and nephews; nine great nieces and great nephews; shared children of Al Loebig: Mike (Victoria) Loebig of Texarkana, Ark.; Scott (Barbara) Parsons of Seattle, Wash.; Larry Loebig of Sioux Falls; Suzanne (David) Loebig Potratz of Sioux Falls; David Loebig of Sioux Falls; his 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; extended family and friends.
