Recently, word was received from Linda Thomas Brown that the R.J. Thomas family had met and discussed the Oak Hill Cemetery Directory project.
Their decision was to contribute the entire cost of the signage and maps made by Denny Holton of Pilot Rock Signs. That figure will be over $8,000 - approximately one-third of the entire project cost.
Steve Thomas has given encouragement for this project since it was first discussed in 2006. His daughter Caitlyn helped with the sign format.
Quoting Linda's letter "We know our parents, R.J. and Doris Thomas, would be proud."
The Oak Hill Directory Committee thanks the Thomas family; Cheryl, Linda, Craig and Steve. The Committee is extremely grateful for the support!
An update of financial progress was given to the Cherokee City Council last week. Donations ranging from $10 to $1,000 have been received. Pilot Rock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution gave a check for $3,000, as Florence Frisbie, our benefactor, is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery.
The City Council authorized the construction of the concrete foundation on which the directory will be built. The foundation will be poured as soon as current projects allow.
The R.J. Thomas family donation, the community donations, and the Cherokee City donation of dirt and concrete work, give the committee approximately $23,000. This is enough financing to cover the cost for erection of the basic building and signage. Approximately $7,000 is the amount needed to do ceiling steel, soffit, post wrap and labor to complete the project as proposed.
Numerous people have said the Oak Hill directory is a worthwhile project and indicated a plan to contribute money to the project. Your help is needed now! The committee is ready to "break ground" so please help with your donations big or small. Remember, many hands make light work.
