SIOUX CITY - Morningside's Larry Mason was named the Great Plains Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year and his Mustangs placed five players on the All-GPAC first team, the league announced last week.
Audri Smith made the squad at No. 1 Singles, Amanda Przymus at No. 2, Mary Horton at No. 3, Megan Solberg at No. 5 and former Cherokee Washington High prep Shannon Schroeder at No. 6.
Schroeder, a senior, had a 9-3 season record for the Mustangs' highest winning percentage (.750).
Schroeder won a total of 30 doubles matches in her career, passing fellow Cherokee alum Lynn Leonard's previous record of 18. Her 47 combined wins are the most in Morningside women's history. In 2011 both the NAIA and the ITA [Intercollegiate Tennis Association] named her a Scholar-Athlete.
"Shannon continued to work hard and improve her game for four years and it really came together this season," said Mason. "I'm very proud that she and the other two members of my first recruiting class [Kassie Hein of Okoboji and Dane Larson of Sioux City East] have all played for a conference championship, been named as Scholar-Athletes, and all will graduate with honors this spring."
