ALTA - The Alta-Aurelia boys, ranked 10th in the state in Class 2A pre-season rankings, took on the Class 4A Sergeant Bluff-Luton team in their season opener here on Monday, and the two teams put on a classic pitching demonstration for the fans.
Jaden Holton pitched six innings for Alta-Aurelia, giving up one earned run on just two hits, while walking three and striking out four. Neil Marshall came on in relief and gave up one hit and walked three.
Austin Delp had the Warriors' only hit as the SB-L pitchers struck out 19
Alta-Aurelia Coach Dan Wendel said he thought that the senior Holton "pitched a great game and was very efficient."
Wendel also said that the Warrior defense was "outstanding," and other than a coverage mistake in the 7th that gave SB-L the go-ahead run, they played great. "Our offensive output - or lack there of - was a combination of their excellent pitching and our lack of practice time and preparation for that type of pitching," said Wendel. "We will have to get to work on our days off and get our bats up to speed. Our kids are very good hitters, but we just need some time to get caught up."
Alta-Aurelia is scheduled to host Ridge View in a softball-baseball doubleheader in Alta on Thursday.
