IDA GROVE - River Valley opened their 2012 baseball season here Friday with a 17-1 win over OA/BC-IG in five innings. Brody Riedemann pitched five innings for the Wolverines, allowing one unearned run on two hits, while walking two and fanning nine. Riedemann faced the minimum total of 21 batters on the night.
Said RV Coach Eric Goettsch, "That is the best I have ever seen Brody pitch. His control was good and he was dominant. The strikeouts are fine, but it tends to lead to quite a few pitches and this early in the season he was only going to pitch five innings regardless."
The Wolverines had 14 hits on the night, with six of their batters knocking out two or more hits. Adam Schirmer had two singles and a double, drove in two runs and stole two bases; freshman catcher Wyatt Fitch had a 3- for -3 night with two singles and a double driving in four runs, and he also had a stolen base; Parker Goettsch was 2 for 3 on the night with two singles, two RBI and two stolen bases; Hunter Casey had two singles, two RBI and a stolen base; Ethan Brown laced a pair of singles and collected three RBI; and Tanner Zahnley had a pair of singles to go along with two RBI.
" We hit the ball hard tonight and we were very aggressive," said Coach Goettsch. " We hit the ball hard up the middle whether it was on the ground or line drives. This is a pretty young team, but they are an experienced young team. Some of these kids have been starting since the 8th grade and their experience in those years is starting to show. We have a long ways to go, but I like the hard hat, blue collar approach this team has. "
The Wolverines host Ar-We-Va in Correctionville on Friday.
