Was Cherokee the place to be last week, or what?
Memorial Day Monday, a wonderful day of remembrance, colorful and poignant military ceremonies at our cemeteries, family leisure and togetherness, cook-outs, and beautiful spring weather got the week off to a rousing start.
Then, as the excitement grew for the annual Cherokee PRCA Rodeo Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The Cherokee Chamber of Commerce, its Rodeo Committee, home-grown Barnes/MJM PRCA Rodeo, and dozens of capable and loyal volunteers combined to produce a three-day extravaganza that amazed the thousands visiting Our Town.
And the weather gave us a bit of rain here and there but was comfortable.
There were awesome fireworks show after Saturday's rodeo performance, along with the huge rodeo crowds, world-class cowboys, and stunning Rodeo Queens.
Before that on Saturday, hundreds dined at the Cherokee Depot's Western BBQ and then hung around town for the fabulous 4 p.m. Rodeo Parade that was again one dynamite event.
Kudos to Parade organizers for the many Shriners' entertaining and exciting mobile units, and the many beautiful horses and their riders, plus all the dedicated local folks who featured floats and displays in the fantastic Parade that lasted more than an hour. Leading the way as always was our devoted VFW Color Guard, which never missed a step. And let's plug Dodge Trucks and Cherokee's Holzhauer Motors who spend good money helping sponsor this Northwest Iowa jewel. The best part of a Rodeo is the memories it brings back and makes for new generations.
Take a bow, Cherokee.
You earned it.
