The 78th annual Sioux Valley Amateur Men's Match-Play Golf Tournament will tee off Saturday and Sunday at the venerable Cherokee Golf & Country Club.
The 2011 Sioux Valley Am Champion Bret Taylor of Council Bluffs is back to defend his title, along with 2010 Champion Bill Mathers of Cushing, 2007 and 2009 Champion J.D. Anderson of Des Moines, 2008 Champion Jeff Campbell of Niles, Ohio, and 2005 and 2006 Champion Todd Sapp of Sioux City.
The match-play format includes 16 golfers to a flight and there are eight flights, including Championship and First Flight which consists of 18-hole matches, and flights 2-7 comprised of nine-hole matches.

There is a qualifying medalist award of $250 and 2010 Cherokee Washington High graduate Matt Pitts leads current qualifiers with a sizzling round of 67 fashioned last week. Pitts will be a junior on the Morningside College golf team this coming year coached by Sapp.
Qualifiers missing the Sioux Valley Am cut automatically qualify for the Sioux Valley Consolation Tournament Sat., June 23. That tourney also is match-play format.
Golfers have a chance to win a 2012 Dodge Charger R/T for each hole-in-one on #4 during first-round match-play Saturday, courtesy of Holzhauer Motors LTD. of Cherokee; and also a 2012 customized Yamaha Golf Cart for each hole-in-one on hole #4 during first-round match-play Saturday, courtesy of Golf Equipment of Le Mars.
Other prizes will be awarded by Royer's Jewelry of Cherokee, and a long-drive contest is sponsored by Coca-Cola.
The $75 entry fee includes an 18-hole practice round and 18 holes qualifying.

"The course is in magnificent shape, I've never seen it better," said Spindler. "Our Course Superintendent Ryan Galles and his crew have done a wonderful job. The golfers have been raving about it all season."
Qualifiers making the cut can call for Tourney Flight times after 6:30 p.m. Friday. The last qualifying times for 18 holes is 1 p.m. Friday, and 3 p.m. Friday for nine holes. Carts are available and should be reserved early.
