Match-Play Golf Classic this weekend

Matt Pitts of Cherokee continues to lead the medalist race for the 78th annual Sioux Valley Amateur Men's Match-Play Golf Tournament in Cherokee after firing a sizzling 33-34-67 at the revered Cherokee Golf & Country Club course last week to take a solid lead.

More than 150 qualifiers have tried their luck into Thursday afternoon, with qualifying deadlines today for nine holes at 3 p.m., and 18 holes at 1 p.m.

The $75 entry fee includes 18 practice holes, 18 qualifying holes, and tournament match-play action either in the Sioux Valley Am this weekend, or the following Saturday (June 23) in the Consolation Tournament for all qualifiers missing the Sioux Valley Am cut.

Also posting low numbers so far in the qualifying rounds were Joel Keady of Orange City 70, 2010 Champion Bill Mathers of Cushing 71, 2008 Champion Jeff Campbell of Niles, Ohio 72, James DeVos of Cherokee 72, 2011 medalist Nick Dreckman of Remsen 73, former Cherokean Dale Judson of Okoboji 74, Paul Hyndman of Cherokee 75, Nate Freed of Dakota Dunes, S.D. 75, Cherokee native Shane Bellefy of Minneapolis, Minn. 75, Austin Sweeney of Sutherland 76, Chris Jenness of Cherokee 76, Tim Gum of Des Moines 77, 2005 asnd 2006 Champion Todd Sapp of Sioux City 77, John Miller of Cherokee 77, former Cherokean Dave Greenwood of Omaha, Neb. 77, Matt Young of Kingsley 77, Kody Wiig of Correctionville 78, Ken Slater Jr, of Holstein 80, and Alex O'Neill of Ponca, Neb. 80.

Tournament action is Saturday and Sunday for Iowa's oldest match-play tournament, with Championship and First Flights playing 18-hole matches, and Flights 2-7 playing 9-hole matches. There are 16 golfers to a Flight.

The medalist Award for Qualifiers is $250. The Championship Flight winner gains a leg on the Frank Greenwood Memorial Trophy, which takes three legs to retire.

Bret Taylor of Council Bluffs is the defending 2011 Sioux Valley Am Champion and will be back to defend this year.

The popular Calcutta Auction and Meal is Friday night, June 15.
