Matt Pitts of Cherokee continues to lead the medalist race for the 78th annual Sioux Valley Amateur Men's Match-Play Golf Tournament in Cherokee after firing a sizzling 33-34-67 at the revered Cherokee Golf & Country Club course last week to take a solid lead.
More than 150 qualifiers have tried their luck into Thursday afternoon, with qualifying deadlines today for nine holes at 3 p.m., and 18 holes at 1 p.m.

Tournament action is Saturday and Sunday for Iowa's oldest match-play tournament, with Championship and First Flights playing 18-hole matches, and Flights 2-7 playing 9-hole matches. There are 16 golfers to a Flight.
Bret Taylor of Council Bluffs is the defending 2011 Sioux Valley Am Champion and will be back to defend this year.
