The Cherokee Washington High softball team continues to battle quality, more experienced Lakes Conference foes and come out on the losing end.
Brookelyn Hoeppner took the pitching loss for the WHS girs against Le Mars, with the Bulldogs scoring five runs with two outs in the fifth inning, and two more in the sixth to ice the game. Le Mars started the game with a three-run first inning to take control early.
In the fourth inning for Cherokee, Megan Hummel singled and scored on a line drive to right field by Emily Haselhoff that got past the right fielder. Haselhoff advanced to third base on the play and then scored on a ground-out by Ariana Smith.
In the loss to Spencer, Haselhoff took the mound loss for Cherokee, allowing 13 runs on 10 hits and three walks in the four innings worked before the game was called due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The Tigers used a big 8-run fourth to seal the deal as the hard-throwing Spencer lefty Richardson shut down the young Cherokee batters on just one hit by Dixson. The hosts stranded five base runners.
The busy WHS club plays every night this week including Saturday, beginning at Estherville-LC tonight, at Sheldon Tuesday, here against Spirit Lake and Hull Western Christian Wednesday and Thursday, and at Spencer Friday and Saturday.
