The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn baseball team won one of four recent games, falling to Hinton 10-1, beating George-Little Rock 5-4, losing 3-2 to Remsen-Union, and falling 6-2 to South O'Brien in Paullina.
The Eagles of coach Ed Smith talied their lone run against Hinton in the fourth inning when Tanner Utesch smacked a home run. The Blackhawks erupted for five runs in the first inning and five more in the fifth inning to salt away the game.
Jared Gross took the pitching loss for MMC, allowing four earned runs on 13 hits and one walk, with seven strikeouts in six innings of work.
Andrew Hoefling, Tyler Prunty, and Zach Specht also had hits for MMC.
In the win over George-Little Rock, Utesch got the win in the exciting eight-inning contest, posting one strikeout in one inning of work, with the Eagles scoring the winning run in their top of the eighth. Zack Kellog pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on two hits and four walks, with three Ks. Dylan Spieler pitched 2/3 an inning and allowed one hit and struck out one batter.
Utesch was a force at the plate with two doubles, a 4-4 night, three RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. Hoefling had two hits and two RBI and a stolen base, and Gross, Prunty, and Specht also notched hits.
Spieler took the heartbreaking pitching loss in the 3-2 setback against R-U in a thrilling nine-inning game, with the Rockets scoring runs in the bottom of the seventh to force the extra innings, and in the bottom of the ninth to win it. Spieler allowed two earned runs on seven hits and five walks, with 11 Ks in 8 1/3 innings. Utesch threw 2/3 an inning and struck out one.
Spieler was 3-4 with an RBI to lad the MMC batters, while Utesch was 4-4 with a run scored, and Specht 2-4 with a run scored.
Against South O'Brien, Spieler got the mound loss, allowing two earned runs on three hits and three walks, with 11 Ks in 5 2/3 innings. Gross pitched 1/3 and inning and gave up one run on two hits and fanned one batter.
Hoefling and Kellog each had a hit and one RBI, and Specht and Spieler each had a double and scored once.
SOS used a five-run sixth inning to blow the game open. Cody Nelson and Landon Lenhart were each 2-3, and Michael Callahan 1-2 with a run scored.
Sam Weber got the pitching win for the Wolverines, firing a four-hitter in seven innings of work.
