Ray was born on August 30, 1939 in Sioux City, Iowa to Harvey L. & Shirley Maxine (Spencer) Flewelling. The family lived on various farms throughout Woodbury and Cherokee counties. After attending schools in Lawton and Washta, Ray graduated from Washta High School in the class of 1958. Following graduation, he attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, IA and Morningside College in Sioux City, IA. He was united in marriage to Linda Lee Mansfield on May 31, 1959 in South Sioux City, NE. After living in other locales, they settled in Cherokee County in 1971, and recently celebrated 53 years of marriage in May. Ray was primarily employed as a long-haul truck driver, including one and a half million miles without an accident for Van Top Industries in Holstein and later for Schuster Trucking in LeMars until his retirement in 2002. He was confirmed in the Lutheran Church and was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby. He enjoyed playing country music on his 1962 Gibson, mostly Johnny Cash, and spent a bit of his downtime fishing in the Little Sioux River and off the grade in Spirit Lake. Finally, Ray enjoyed spending time with his many nieces, nephews, cousins and assorted outlaws whom, due to the biblical proportions, are too numerous to mention.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Scottie Flewelling and son Leroy Scott Flewelling.

Ray is survived by his wife Linda of Cherokee, IA; his progeny of which we know include: Travis Flewelling of Clayton, NC; Harvey D. (Kris) Flewelling of Superior, CO; Kathleen Flewelling (Greg Barker) of Seaside, OR; Michelle George of Ruthven, IA; Bart (Angela) Flewelling of Sioux Falls, SD; D'Artagnan Flewelling of Omaha, NE; & Luther (Lori) Flewelling of Spirit Lake, IA; Ray's 14 grandchildren in order of conception: Lindsey Flewelling, Kory Barker, Rhea Toler, Chase Hage, Laura Hage, Michael Flewelling, Jordan Flewelling, David Flewelling, Douglas Flewelling, Sam Flewelling George, Cecelia Flewelling, Jack George, Keenan Flewelling and Luther Flewelling Jr.; and not least in the continuing roll of survivors: Ray's brother Ronald "Ronnie" (Donna) Flewelling of Washta, IA; 2 half-brothers: Jerry (Amber) Flewelling of Quimby, IA & Francis Flewelling of Washta, IA.
