Solid nucleus leads youthful MMC baseball squad

MARCUS - Savvy veteran coach Ed Smith returned to the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn baseball team after several years in retirement and was greeted by a skilled nucleus of youthful players with just one senior on the squad.

Pitching will be the MMC calling card this season, along with a handful of very good hitters who must carry much of the load this season.

That pitching unit consists of sophomore Dylan Spieler, and juniors Tanner Utesch, Jared Gross, and Zack Kellog.

A talented group of juniors must provide the necessary leadership this year, along with the lone senior Zach Specht, and they include Jacob Mehan, Andrew Hoefling, Nate Rassel, Tyler Prunty, Ben Phillips, Levi Letsche, and Mitch Werthman.

Besides Spieler, sophomore Zach Reuter also will immediately impact the Eagle club.

Six up-and-coming freshmen also may figure into the fray as the season unwids, including Conner Holmes, Ben McDaniel, Austin Whited, Jacob Kach, Isaiah Petersen, and Nathan Ruba.

Smith is assisted this season by Lonnie Boekhout.
