The annual Cherokee PRCA Rodeo took the title of "Best Place to Take a Family" at the Western Iowa Tourism Region's recent annual meeting in Wall Lake.
More than 700 Members of the tourism industry determined, by popular vote, the "Best of the West" in nine categories. Nominations were solicited on the Western Iowa Tourism Region website, through Survey Monkey, emails and community announcements.
Following 150 nominations and 798 votes, the popular Cherokee Rodeo, just completing its 46th year, was named "best in the West."
"Tourism is a proven economic driver for Iowa, generating more that $6 billion in revenue and more than 62,000 jobs," said Shirley Phillips, President of both the Western Iowa Tourism Region and Travel Federation of Iowa, and Director of the Sac County Economic Development office.
One of the top ten employers in Iowa, tourism fuels Iowa's economy in all 99 counties by providing jobs that cannot be outsourced, encouraging local entrepreneurship and attracting visitors from all 50 states and foreign countries who bring new money to our communities.
"Our Board of Directors feels that it is important to honor exceptional attractions, events and recreational opportunities that contribute to healthy local economies as they strive for excellence, said Michele Walker, Director of the Western Iowa Tourism Region.
The 200-member organization works to connect communities, attractions and businesses interested in developing and promoting travel and tourism in western Iowa. The Western Iowa Tourism Region is funded by the Iowa Economic Development Authority, County Boards of Supervisors in the region and private memberships from chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, convention bureaus, attractions, events, communities and numerous other organizations.
Regional bi-monthly meetings are held throughout the 36-county area and the public is invited to attend.
