MMC boys win one of three conference games

The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn baseball team won one of three War Eagle Conference games last week, falling 9-0 to Remsen St. Mary's in Marcus, defeating West Sioux in Hawarden 11-6, and losing 6-3 to Orange City Unity Christian in Marcus.

Pitcher Tanner Utesch took the loss against St. Mary's, allowing seven earned runs on five hits and one walk in one inning of work. Zach Specht came on in relief to pitch six innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks, with three strikeouts.

Remsen St. Mary's pitcher Beau Pick shut down the Eagle attack with a five-hit shutout and 12 Ks, and also led the Hawks at bat with three hits, a double and triple, and three RBI.

Getting hits for MMC were Andrew Hoefling, Zack Kellogg, Tyler Prunty, Specht, and Dylan Spieler.

Spieler got the mound win over West Sioux, giving up three earned runs on five hits and seven walks, with six Ks in six innings or work. Jared Gross relieved and gave up one run on two hits and one walk, with two Ks in one inning.

Utesch paced the Eagles at the plate with a 2-4 effort, four big RBI, and a run scored. Spieler was 2-3 with two runs scored, Kellogg 2-3 and a run scored, Hoefling 1-4 with a home run, Specht 1-3 with an RBI and three runs scored, and Prunty hit a double and scored a run.

In the narrow loss to Unity Christian, Gross took the pitching loss, allowing six runs on 14 hits and two walks, with one K in seven innings.

Utesch agan led the MMC batters with a 3-4 game, two RBI, a triple and run scored. Gross had two hits and scored a run, and Specht singled and scored a run.

The MMC boys host Le Mars Gehlen tonight, and end regular season play at Remsen-Union Thursday night.
