Cherokee Swim Team hosts meet

CHEROKEE-The Cherokee Swim Team took to the water for the second time this season - their first time playing host - on Wednesday June 27, after being rained out of their scheduled second meet on the 20th. They welcomed the team from Rockwell City which had almost 40 swimmers competing against Cherokee's 58. The team had a great meet with great swims by many swimmers and three records broken by one swimmer. The team had three swimmers that won all three of their individual events, four that won two of their events and eight more that won one of their individual events.

Leading the way for Cherokee was Kylie Mongan in the 11-12 girls' age group, where she not only won all three of her events but also broke records in all three events. In the 100m freestyle, she broke Kaely Hummel's record of 1:14.99, set last summer, by going 1:12.98 on the way to her first win of the night. In her other two events, Kylie broke her own records from last summer. In the 50m backstroke her previous record was :40.93 ,and her new mark is :39.22 . In the 100 Individual Medley (I.M.), her previous best was 1:31.85 and her new mark is 1:27.7. Another triple winner was Megan Brown, who took first in the 9-10 girls' 50m freestyle with a winning time of :38.81. Then, in the 25m freestyle, Megan took only 17.9 seconds to win the race and in the 100m I.M. she posted a winning time of 2:05.98. Kenna Mongan also posted three wins in the 8 & under girls' age group , taking the 50m freestyle in :52.85, the 25m freestyle in :23.07, and the 100m I.M. in 2:17.94.

The double winners included two girls and two boys. For the girls, Mikki Hinkhouse was a double winner in the 15 & over age group, where she won the 100m freestyle in 1:23.27 as well as the 50m freestyle in :37.41. Liz Herrera was the other girl double winner, posting wins in two events in the 13-14 girls' age group. She took first in the 50m breaststroke in a time of :47.61, and in the 100m I.M. in 1:40.74. On the boys' side, Tyler Richardson in the 11-12 boys' age group won the 50m breaststroke in :49.73, as well as the 50m freestyle in :39.29; while Simon Mummert won both the 50m freestyle, in :59.20, and the 25m freestyle in :27.23 in the 8 & under age group.

The list of single winners starts with Brett Barritt, who won the 50m freestyle in the 13-14 boys' age group in a time of :31.16; Trevor Lundquist was a single winner in the 11-12 boys' 50m butterfly with his time of :56.66; Two boys in the 9-10 age group posted victories- Matthew Stieneke won a close race against teammate Carson Mongan in the 25m freestyle , with Matthew posting a winning time of :19.13 to Carson's second place time of :19.36. Carson did have one win for the night, in the 50m freestyle, where his :43.82 showing was good for first place. For the girls, there was single winner Emma Jensen in the 9-10 girls' 25m butterfly ,which she won in :26.00; Taylor Richardson and Alyssa Trapp each won events in the 11-12 girls' age group - Taylor took first in the 50m freestyle in :38.13, while Alyssa won the 50m breaststroke in :50.61. Kayla Riedemann won the 13-14 girls' 50m freestyle in :39.68.

The team won 13 of 14 relay races it competed in, and the long list of winning relays starts with the 8 & under girls. The 100m Medley Relay team of Rayann Patterson, Kenna Mongan, Jacklyn Goettsch and Sara Williams won in 2:24.21; while the 100m Free Relay team was made up of Bailey Wilkie, Mongan, Goettsch and Williams and they won in 2:10.09. The next winning group was the 9-10 girls, who won the 100m Medley Relay in 1:41.74 with members Trysten Frazier, Eleanor Chalstrom, Emma Jensen and Megan Brown and also the 100m Free Relay with members Jillian Steffes, Jensen, Chalstrom and Brown in a time of 1:31.53.

The 9-10 boys also won their two relays, with, Matthew Stieneke, Carson Mongan, Cael Wood and Curtis Riedemann making up both relays. The 100m Medley Relay was won in 1:47.82 while the 100m Free Relay was won in 1:28.10. The 11-12 girls were also winners in both their relay events with the 200m Medley Relay team of Kylie Mongan, Alyssa Trapp, Addisyn Jensen and Apryl Mesler winning in 3:00.11 and the 200m Free Relay team of Jennifer Barritt, Mongan, Trapp and Mesler winning in 2:41.48. The 13-14 girls' 200m Free Relay team posted victory while using a younger swimmer to fill in the ranks. Winning in 2:42.93 were team members Liz Herrera, Roni McCormick, Kayla Riedemann and Taylor Hirschman. The 13-14 boys' relay teams were also mixed by age but won both events, with the 200m Medley Relay team of Jacob Tuttle, Tyler Richardson, Brett Barritt and Trevor Lundquist winning in 3:37.22 while the 200m Free Relay team consisted of Brock Mier, Richardson, Lundquist and Barritt, and they won in 3:06.96.

The 15 & over age group needed a little help from lifeguards and former swim team members Brianna Fowler and Katie Sambrano to get the job done in their two relays. They joined current team members Mikki Hinkhouse and Courtney Johnson for the 200m Medley Relay, which they won in 3:00.75, and in the 200m Free Relay, where their winning time was 2:40.17.

Cherokee Coach Jodi B Mongan said it was a fun night despite the heat, and after taking several breaks for water and to let the timers and workers cool off, the meet was still over by a few minutes after 8 p.m.

" Improved times and the record breaking swims were just 'icing on the cake' for the Cherokee Swim Team," said Mongan.
