Barbara Lou Blair of Peterson died July 8, 2012 in Spencer, at the age of 76 years. Graveside services will be held Saturday July 14 at 11 a.m. at the Waterman Cemetery in Sutherland.
Born October 24, 1935, the only child of Pauline (McCullough) Cole and Marlin Cole of Lake City,
Barbara spent her childhood and high school years in Lake City, and worked at a Lake City doctor's office until her marriage to John Blair of Yetter, Iowa on March 11, 1955. Born of this union were three daughters - Susan, Stacey and Stephanie.
Barbara worked at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute for many years befire retiring in 1992. Early retirement afforded her the luxury of a life of travel with the love of her life, Stewart Fern. Living most recently, in Peterson, they also resided in Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Over the years, Barb enjoyed collecting quilts, playing bridge as well as "buck euchre," reading, bird watching, caring for her Amazon Parrot Tashia, and the occasional trip to the casino. She made a fast friend of each acquaintance and never missed an opportunity to strike up a conversation with passers-by.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Left to treasure her memory are her partner Stewart Fern M.D.; her daughters Susan Drefke and husband Mark of Sutherland; Stacey Duncan of Bastrop, Texas and Stephanie Shaffer and husband Robert of Sugar Land, Texas; and several grandchildren, including Kristin (Tom) Pry; Mason (Heidi) Drefke; Cole Drefke and special friend, Sheri Penning; Brady Blair; Jonathan Kelley; Ashley, Breann and Katy Duncan; Austin, Corey and Tanner Shaffer, as well as 12 great-grandchildren.
