Library News

Thursday, July 12, 2012

The July calendar at the Cherokee Public Library holds two big events coming up next week.

Our annual summer book sale kicks off at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 19. All year long we store nice donated books and other items in a closet for the July sale ,and we're ready to empty that closet. We will once again have a variety of things including books, CDs, puzzles and a few VHS tapes. This year we will also have a good supply of DVDs, some that are donated duplicates and others that are withdrawals from our movie collection. Prices will range from $.50 to $5.

For those of you who enjoy a bargain, please stop in and take a look at what's currently in the sale room. From now through Wednesday, July 18, all of the books are going for $.05!

Next on the schedule is the visit from RAGBRAI riders. We will be open special hours on Sunday, July 22 from noon - 4 p.m. and following is information concerning that activity.

On Sunday computer use preference will be given to RAGBRAI participants. We encourage our regulars, especially game players, to choose a different time to come in. When we leave on Sunday we will be locking the outside set of doors on Maple Street, so our book drop will not be available from 4 p.m. on Sunday until Monday morning around 9:30 a.m.

We also advise patrons who may think about stopping in on Sunday that most parking around the library will be blocked off due to the location of the entertainment stage and beer garden in the parking lot across the street. It is my understanding scenery around the library that day will include porta potties, barricades and maybe a beer truck.

I don't anticipate the huge demand and long lines for computers like we had ten years ago due to smart phones, Ipads etc., but I know there will be lots of riders in the building relaxing and cooling off. I just hope the weather will be kinder than it was in 2002. That year the building's inside temperature went above 80 as our mechanical system struggled to cope with a combination of outside heat, the number of people inside and doors opening and opening and opening.

After RAGBRAI leaves town it will be business as usual. Open hours until Labor Day weekend are Monday and Thursday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. - noon. Enjoy what's left of the summer
