Cherokee Swim Team hosts recent meet

The Cherokee Swim Team hosted the second home meet of the season taking to the water on Monday, July 2, to avoid the 4th of July holiday which fell on Wednesday this year - their regular meet night.

The team played host to Eagle Grove, which is a cross-conference rival and hadn't had a chance to swim in Cherokee previously. They were impressed with the facility, and had a great time swimming against a Cherokee squad back to full strength with the end of the baseball and softball seasons. Eagle Grove brought 28 of its 32 swimmers to face 65 of Cherokee's 70 swimmers.

Twenty-two Cherokee swimmers posted wins during the meet, with eight winning all three of their individual events. Five more swimmers posted two wins during the meet, and an additional nine had single event victories. The team also won 12 of the 14 relay events in which they competed.

The triple winner list starts with Mikki Hinkhouse in the 15 & over girls' age group, where she won the 100m freestyle in 1:23.32, the 50m backstroke in :48.26 and the 50m freestyle in :36.28. Grace Teusink won her events in the 13-14 girls' age group, where she took the 50m backstroke in :45.79, the 50m freestyle in :39.47 and the 100m I.M. in 1:39.9. Next up was Megan Brown in the 9-10 girls' age group, where she won the 50m freestyle in :39.51, the 25m freestyle in :18.33 and the 100m I.M. in 2:07.8. Kenna Mongan was the other girl to post three wins, winning the 8 & under girls' 50m freestyle in :54.47, the 25m breaststroke in :35.19 and the 100m I.M. in 2:24.48.

For the boys, the triple winners were Brett Barritt in the 13-14 100m freestyle in 1:15.46, the 50m backstroke in :45.49 and the 50m freestyle in :33.25; Tyler Richardson took three firsts in the 11-12 age group, winning the 100m freestyle in 1:33.69, the 50m breaststroke in :50.13 and the 50m freestyle in :39.81; Matthew Stieneke, in the 9-10 age group, won the 25m backstroke in :24.6, the 50m freestyle in :49.15, and the 25m freestyle in another close race where he had to go :18.66 to beat out his teammate for the win. The final triple winner for the night was Simon Mummert in the 8 & under age group, where he won the 50m freestyle in :58.55, the 25m backstroke in :32.10 and the 25m freestyle in :26.9.

The list of double winners includes Taylor Vandervort, who won the 8 & under boys' 25m butterfly in :49.46 and the 25m breaststroke In :42.56; and Mikayla Steffes, who won two events on the girls' side of that age group where she took the 25m backstroke in :31.19 and the 25m freestyle in :26.59. There were two double winners in the 11-12 age group, Taylor Richardson won the 50m freestyle in :37.87 and the 100m I.M. in 1:46.41; while teammate Kylie Mongan won the 100m freestyle in 1:11.74, breaking her record from last week of 1:12.98. She also won the 50m backstroke in :40.06 before leaving the meet for a make-up softball game. The final double winner was Liz Herrera in the 13-14 girls' age group, where she took first in the 50m butterfly in :46.19 as well as in the 50m breaststroke, where her winning time was :48.54.

Finally the single winners included two boys from the 9-10 age group: Cael Wood in the 25m butterfly, with a time of :26.49 and Carson Mongan in the 100m freestyle, in 1:38.96.

For the girls, the single winners were Angel Jansen in the 8 & under 25m butterfly in :42.57; Megan Boger in the in the 9-10 age group 25m backstroke in :25.92; Emma Jensen in the 25m butterfly in :25.28 and Jillian Steffes in the 25m breaststroke in :31.1.

In the 11-12 age group were Addisyn Jensen in the 50m butterfly in :51.75 and Alyssa Trapp in the 50m breaststroke in :52.11. Assistant Coach Taylor Hirschman also won the 13-14 100m freestyle in 1:21.76.

The list of winning relay teams begins with the 8 & under girls, where the 100m Medley Relay team of Hanna Mummert, Kenna Mongan, Angel Jansen and Makayla Steffes won in 2:33.48 and the 100m Free Relay team of Lauren Schubert, Sarah Mesler, Steffes and Mongan won in 1:25.61.

Cherokee won all the 9-10 relays, with the girls' 100m Medley Relay team of Megan Boger, Eleanor Chalstrom, Emma Jensen and Megan Brown finishing in 1:37.14, while the 100m Free Relay team of Aliyah Graybill, Boger, Jensen and Brown won in 1:32.44.

For the boys, it was Matthew Stieneke, Carson Mongan, Cael Wood and Curtis Riedemann winning both events with the 100m Medley team finishing in 1:47.89 and the 100m Free Relay team finishing in 1:28.27. The 11-12 girls' relays also won both their events with the 200m Medley Relay team consisting of Kylie Mongan, Alyssa Trapp, Addisyn Jensen and Taylor Richardson finishing in 2:58.3 while the 200m Free Relay team finished in 2:47.68 and consisted of Jennifer Barritt, Brianna Sleezer, Trapp and Richardson. The 13-14 girls' relay teams both won with members from various age groups. In the 200m Medley event it was Isabel Gebers, McKenna Alitz, Liz Herrera and Justice Wolff who won in 3:18.21 while the 200m Free Relay team consisted of Mady Rosewall, Grace Teusink, Kayla Riedemann and Alitz and won in 2:53.27.

The 15 & over relays both won, with the 200m Medley Relay team of Kayla Riedemann, Grace Teusink and Taylor Hirschman swimming up an age group with Mikki Hinkhouse to win the event in 3:22.47, and In the Free Relay, they again got help from Brianna Fowler,who, along with Hirschman, Herrera and Hinkhouse, won the event in a time of 2:30.01.

The team's next meet is scheduled for July 11 in Laurens.
