Newell-Fonda loses state opener

FORT DODGE - Charter Oak-Ute's Ashley Goslar singled to right in the top of the 7th inning to score Mariah Meseck, who had reached base on a error by Newell-Fonda shortstop Renee Maneman, making the score CO-U 4, N-F 3, in the two team's opening round game of the Class 1-A State softball tournamt at Rogers Park here on Monday.

With one out in Newell-Fonda's half of the 7th, Maneman singled and was caught stealing by CO-U catcher Meseck. Aly Henrich struck out swinging to end the game, and Charter Oak-Ute (28-12) took a 4-3 win.

Jen Falline took the loss in the pitcher's circle for Newell-Fonda.

Newell-Fonda (34-8) will now meet Gehlen Catholic at noon on Wednesday in a Consolation Bracket game.
