CORRECTIONVILLE - The River Valley Community School District is proud to announce its new Superintendent, Donita Joens.
Joens brings a wealth of experience to the district, primarily in the areas of raising student achievement scores, forming partnerships with the community, and promoting student leadership.
Among her administrative achievements, Joens has implemented an all-school student council and sponsored a decade of 8th grade field trips to Washington, D.C.
An Advisory program, District Wellness activities, and Equity projects were other recent accomplishments of Joens during her 13 years serving the New Hampton, Iowa School District as Middle School Principal.
Joens, who graduated from High School in Charles City, and earned her bachelor's degree in biology from Luther College in Decorah, taught high school biology, physics, and chemistry and also coached volleyball and basketball at Greene High School before transitioning into administration.
Joens has been a Middle School Principal at the North Iowa and New Hampton Community School Districts, and has been honored as a finalist for the School Administrators of Iowa's Middle School Principal of the Year award. Joens obtained both her Masters degree in educational administration and her Superintendent certification through Iowa State University.
Donita is married to Jeff, who is employed at Simonsen's in Quimby, and they have four children: Trevor, Karch, Judd, and Chantel. Trevor and Karch are both accounting majors from Wartburg College, while Judd and Chantel are finishing their studies at Luther College and Iowa State University, respectively. Judd is a biology major who is pursuing physical therapy as a career, while Chantel is an architectural design student.
Donita likes to walk, bike, play her flute, and spend time with family and friends.
Joens says she has an open-door policy, and is anxious to meet all students, staff, parents, and community members.
"I am so impressed with everyone I have met," she says. " Everyone has truly welcomed me into the community, and I am honored to lead our school district." Joens wants to create a strong partnership between the school and community in developing caring students who will be leaders in the 21st Century.
You may contact her by any of the following methods: telephone, 712-372-4420 (W) or 712-342-9029 (H); email, firstname.lastname@example.org; or visits to her office.
Joens' message to the communities of Washta, Quimby, Correctionville and Cushing: "Let's work together for our students, and keep moving forward. Go Wolverines!"
Joens replaces former long-time River Valley Superintendent Julie DeStigter, who retired at the end of last school year.
